‘If you want Donald Trump to win, then say that’: Vice President Kamala Harris’s defiant rebuke of pro-Palestine hecklers

US Vice President Kamala Harris has butted heads with a group of pro-Palestine hecklers and warned former president Donald Trump would win the election in November if they continued.

Ms Harris was touring America’s swing states alongside Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, her vice presidential candidate, and landed on Wednesday in Detroit, Michigan.

At an aircraft hangar in Detroit, Ms Harris fronted thousands of supporters before a group of pro-Palestine protesters began chanting.

“Kamala, Kamala, you can’t hide, we won’t vote for genocide,” the group yelled out.

Ms Harris then snapped back and invoked the line she used against former vice president Mike Pence during their debate leading up to the 2020 election.

“I’m here because we believe in democracy,” Ms Harris said.

“Everyone’s voice matters, but I am speaking now, I am speaking now.”

For the latest on the US Presidential Election

Ms Harris’s remarks were met with cheers by the thousands of rallygoers who waved signs which read “When We Fight We Win”, before the vice president dove into an attack on Donald Trump.

“So Project 2025, look, if he is elected, Donald Trump plans to give tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations. He intends to cut social security and Medicare, he intends to surrender our fight against the climate crisis, and he intends to end the Affordable Care Act.”

But as the protesters continued chanting, Ms Harris addressed them directly and said: “You know what? If you want Donald Trump to win, then say that, otherwise, I’m speaking.”

Ms Harris then paused as louder cheers erupted around the hangar with new polls suggesting her popularity has been growing since President Joe Biden dropped out of the running for re-election.

It came after Mr Trump’s running mate JD Vance stunned reporters on the tarmac in Wisconsin, where Ms Harris was rallying, because he wanted to “get a good look” at the Air Force Two aircraft.

“Because hopefully, it’s going to be my plane in a few months,” Mr Vance told reporters.

“I also thought you guys might get lonely because the Vice President doesn’t answer questions from reporters and hasn’t for 17 days.”

Ms Harris’s “I’m speaking” line echoes her debate on taxation in October, 2020, with Mr Pence, Donald Trump’s former vice president.

At the time, Ms Harris made the case President Biden had made it “very clear” he would not raise taxes for people earning less than $400,000.

Mr Pence immediately cut in and said Mr Biden had vowed to “repeal the Trump tax cuts”.

“Mr Vice President I’m speaking, I’m speaking,” Ms Harris said.
