A true story that sounds like a joke: Americans donate to help Meghan and her husband buy a house after complaining about being cut off financially. Is Harry really that "poor"?

The Duke of Sussex has spoken out against the fact that his family cut him off financially and forced him and his wife to live off the assets of the late Princess Diana, causing many mixed opinions.

In a bombshell interview on March 7, the Duke of Sussex revealed that the couple decided to sign lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify because: ” My family has really cut me off financially .” Harry said that in the first quarter of 2020, he stopped receiving support from his family. The couple can only live on Princess Diana’s inheritance.

” I have what my mother left me and without it we wouldn’t be able to do these things. It’s like she predicted what was going to happen and has been with us through this whole process ,” Harry said.

Immediately after the televised confession, an American supporter of the Sussexes named Anastasia Hanson (56 years old) decided to call for funds on GoFundMe to help the couple. This woman said that she personally works in mental health, racial equality, diversity and inclusion, so she understands the “problems” that Meghan and her husband face. Therefore, she decided to raise funds to help and show her compassion for the royal couple.

Americans raise funds to support the Sussexes in buying a house on GoFundMe.

Ms. Hanson also added that Harry and Meghan came to the United States “without a job and with limited money” and the couple had to pay a mortgage to buy their current million-dollar house, so Ms. Hanson hopes that this support can help the couple quickly “heal the wounds”.

And the goal that Ms. Hanson wants to raise for the Sussexes is 10 million USD (more than 230 billion VND at the current exchange rate). After 2 days of setting up the fund, the current amount of money donated to the Sussexes is more than 100 USD (more than 2 million VND). Many opinions have opposed this ridiculous fundraising action because they say that the Sussexes are not as “poor” as many people think.

Are the Sussexes “poor”?

In May 2019, Forbes estimated Meghan’s net worth at $2.2 million (over VND50 billion) based on her salary from the US TV show Suits. Before marrying Harry, she also starred in several films, including Remember Me, and ran her own blog.

After Princess Diana passed away, she left her inheritance to her two sons. According to PageSix, the initial amount of money Harry inherited from Princess Diana was about $8.9 million (more than 200 billion VND) on his 25th birthday. Over time, this amount increased thanks to investments and compound interest, reaching about $13 million (nearly 300 billion VND) when Prince Harry turned 30.

Harry admitted on television that he had to live off his mother’s fortune.

Harry and Meghan are currently residing in California. They moved into a 9-bedroom mansion worth $14.7 million (over 300 billion VND) in Montecito last July. Mortgage payments on this mansion may not be a concern for Harry and Meghan in the future. Because in September last year, they signed a multi-million dollar deal with Netflix. In December 2020, they continued to sign a deal with Spotify, estimated to be worth 1,000 billion VND to create podcast content.

It can be said that the royal couple’s decision to move to America and buy a large house to settle down was their choice. Their lack of finances to start a new life was also their problem. Why did Harry mention that he was no longer financially supported by his family? Did Harry just want to gain more than lose? Or did the Duke of Sussex not want to do much, just sit and wait to be pampered?

A British royal aide once said: ” No one told Harry to buy this expensive villa. It was his choice .”
